Hawkins argues that there needs to be a variety of sources for children to learn from and in turn it accommodates the different identities the children have. Literacies are also a big factor in both studies as Hawkins believes that students must have different forms of languages and literacies in order to be successful in the classroom. Both authors can agree that identity is something that students form through their own experiences and what environment they grew up in. That aspect of identity is once again being brought up with culture and individuality. Hawkins is looking at how identity can play a role in language acquisition and starts off with the premise “Identity formation can be described as a negotiation between the individual and social context or environment”, (Hawkins p. The author is a white woman and uses this knowledge to her advantage by understanding that she has to let the students express themselves so they can learn and understand what they are reading. The author is saying that through the process of giving the class a name, she is learning way more about what their cultural and gender identity is, which is African American women.

Wissman stated that “Within the students naming of the course-Sistahs- gender and cultural identity are marked”, (Wissman p. Wissman is a teacher of an elective class that is centered around African American literature and in doing so finds out the students taking that class are African American and decided to name the class “Sistahs”. Both texts look at how identity can play a role in education, how literacies are involved in understanding identity, and what it means for future learners. Although Wissman is dealing with older children and Hawkins is trying to understand language acquisition within young children, both texts are trying to understand how literacies and identity are connected within the education system. Finally, there has been a lot of work put into the writings and the effort that has been put in is shown within the writing.Įducation is something that is important to society and the way we learn is a big part of whether or not it is enjoyable. Also, both sections are written in relation to the bigger themes which are identity and literacy. The reasons give great commentary to whoever is reading and do not just jump from one topic to the next. Also, the reasons I have given for what I chose to cite also go along with the arguments that I am trying to make. My subclaims do not move away from the bigger thesis and the evidence is cited properly and makes sense to what I am arguing. My thesis for both sections create a great argument that can be later discussed in my writing. My paper deserves a high B or a low A because I have done everything the rubric asks for with great detail.
